Children are never crowded at Moffats

Children are never crowded at Moffats. The small size of the school means that each child is closely observed throughout the day.

The Moffats ethos is one of kindness, friendship and mutual respect backed by sensible discipline.

The Moffats Community

Education at Moffats extends well beyond the classroom into every aspect of school. Indeed, the Moffats community is part of learning, which is not entirely focused on the individual.

Children learn the value of ‘mucking in’ to get jobs done for the benefit of all, and are given the space to enjoy their childhood as individuals and as members of a community that lives, works and plays together.

Moffats has been fully co-educational since 1979, welcoming day, boarding, weekly boarding children from the ages of four to thirteen. Hard work is balanced by fun, an essential ingredient for school days.

Riding: A Moffats stablehand plaits one of the school ponies

The original Georgian stables are still in use. Children who volunteer to be stablehands help care for our ponies in their spare time.

Learning to join in

Children join in with daily tasks. Community life at Moffats encourages children to want to ‘do their bit’, and to develop a positive approach to tasks, which are undertaken willingly and happily, rather than grudgingly. We don’t use the allocation of chores as a punishment, but help children gain a sense of responsibility.

A wider community

The needs of parents in daily life, as well as of children, are catered for by Moffats. Extended hours of supervised care before or after the school day can easily be arranged and most individual requirements met, which for day children includes a wide range of ‘flexi-boarding’ options.

Children often choose to maintain their involvement with Moffats, sometimes long after they leave school. Many of our old boys and girls keep in close touch, and return in their first year after leaving to see their old friends. As they grow older, they continue to visit us and keep an eye on changes or to gather at the Moffats Society's events at the school.

Children never quite leave Moffats, in a sense...
