Captain Robert Sugden

Assistant Equerry to HM Queen and Regimental Recruiting Officer

Robert Sugden was a Moffats pupil from 1991-1994, after which he went on to Shrewsbury and then to Oxford, where he gained an Honours degree.

Robert is currently very honoured to be performing as the Assistant Equerry to the Queen.  When Her Majesty is in residence in Buckingham Palace it is his job to help the Equerry run the many audiences, investitures, credentials and receptions that occur on an almost daily basis.  He said, "It is a job that has given me the opportunity to meet and speak to some fascinating and inspiring people."  Robert is also heavily involved in the many ceremonial events that Her Majesty presides over.

Over the last year or so, Robert was the Anti-tank Platoon Commander within the Support Company of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.  Since he was due to take to take over his current job, he was unable to deploy with the Battalion on their operational tour in Afghanistan.  He was however, deployed in 2006 and in the last Afghanistan tour in 2007-2008.

Robert was awarded the Medal of Merit by the US Forces in Helmand Province for Services Rendered to Operation Enduring Freedom and received a Joint Commanders Commendation from the British Forces.

Over the last four years, he has played rugby for the Army 1st XV.  This has given Robert the great opportunity to play rugby in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and all manner of clubs in the UK.  He has been privileged to play in the last four Army vs Navy matches and to have been on the winning side of each one.

In September 2008 he played for the Help for Heroes side and was given the task of packing down with Martin Johnson, Richard Hill, Lawrence Dallaglio and Mark Regan, as well as playing alongside the likes of Will Greenwood, Jason Robinson and Martin Offiah.

We hope to receive more news from Robert over the coming months.
